Following Jesus’ Lead in Evangelism

Jesus: The Greatest Evangelist

As Christians, we often struggle with how to share our faith with others. We may feel like it’s up to us to convince people of the truth of the gospel, but in reality, Jesus has already done the hard work. In his earthly ministry, Jesus was the greatest evangelist, and his example can teach us valuable lessons about how to relate to those around us.

Imitating Jesus

When we look at Jesus’ life and ministry, we see that he was the perfect example of how to live a life pleasing to God. He was fully conformed to the image of God and spoke only the words that the Father wanted him to say. He woke up each morning eager to listen to his Father’s voice and do his will. As we observe Jesus’ perfection, we can draw ethical teaching for our own lives and principles for our relationships with others.

Jesus’ Conversations

Studying Jesus’ conversations with a variety of people during his life can provide us with timeless wisdom for our approach to evangelism. We see how he interacted with people from different backgrounds and with different views, always speaking truth and showing love and compassion. His conversations were filled with grace and truth, and he was able to attract people to the Father through his words and actions.

The Convictions of Jesus

As Christians, we hold certain convictions about Jesus. We believe that he is the Creator of all things, the eternal Word who brings light to those in darkness, and the mighty God who became human to save us. We also believe that he is the greatest evangelist, who draws people to himself and does the main work of calling people to faith.

Our Role in Evangelism

So what is our role in evangelism? We are not the primary means of salvation; Jesus has already done the hard work. However, we are called to be fellow laborers with him, sharing the gospel and loving and serving those around us. We should be asking the Lord to do his work in the hearts of those we long to see come to faith, rather than relying on our own abilities or gifts.

Learning from Jesus

As we read the four Gospels, we can learn from Jesus’ example how to relate to those we meet, whatever their views or way of life. We can learn how to live before unbelievers, love them, serve them, and speak truth to them. We can also learn from his apostles, who obeyed his command to go to all nations with the gospel and imitated the example Jesus set in his life.

By following Jesus’ example and learning from his conversations and convictions, we can become more effective evangelists and share the gospel with those around us. Remember, Jesus has already done the hard work; we are simply called to be his fellow laborers.
