Embracing Spiritual Motherhood: A Biblical Imperative

Embracing the Titus Mandate: A Journey of Spiritual Motherhood

As I sit on my porch, reflecting on my life’s journey, I am reminded of the importance of embracing the Titus mandate. This biblical imperative, found in Titus 2:3-5, calls older women to teach and train younger women in the ways of God. It is a journey that I have been privileged to embark on, and one that I believe is essential for the growth and development of women in the church.

My Personal Journey

I must admit that I was slow to understand the significance of the Titus mandate. As a young pastor’s wife, I was arrogant and failed to value the wisdom and experience of older women in my life. However, as I grew older and wiser, I began to see the beauty and importance of this biblical imperative. I realized that I had missed out on a rich provision of God’s grace by not taking Titus 2 seriously.

The Importance of Spiritual Motherhood

Spiritual motherhood is not just about biological mothers; it’s about women who possess faith and spiritual maturity, entering into nurturing relationships with younger women to encourage and equip them to live for God’s glory. This ministry is not limited to those who have children; it’s a calling that gives great joy and comfort to all women who are willing to invest in the lives of others.

The Cost of Discipleship

Discipleship is not a casual or superficial relationship; it’s a costly investment of time, energy, and resources. Physical mothering is sacrificial, and so is spiritual motherhood. We must be willing to pour our lives into others, sharing our wisdom, experience, and love with those who are seeking to grow in their faith.

The Motivation for Discipleship

So, why should we make this investment? The answer is simple: because Jesus appeared in grace and will appear in glory. Between his two appearings, we are called to make disciples. The gospel is the only motive that will incentivize us to lifelong obedience. It’s not about guilt, self-fulfillment, or excitement about a new program; it’s about the transformative power of the gospel.

The Power of the Gospel

The pressure is off; Jesus is redeeming and purifying his people. Our role is to share the gospel and our lives with others, trusting that God will do his redeeming and purifying work in them. It’s not our persuasiveness or efforts that will save and sanctify others; it’s the power of the gospel.

A Call to Action

My dear sisters, I urge you to take the Titus mandate seriously. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to become a woman involved in discipleship relationships with other women. Whether you’re a biological mother or not, you have the potential to be a spiritual mother to someone who is seeking to grow in their faith. Let’s join together in this journey of spiritual motherhood, trusting that God will use us to transform lives and bring glory to himself.
