Caring for One Another Followers of Jesus are called to care for each other in times of need. This isn’t a task for experts, but for every believer.

A Call to Care for One Another

As followers of Jesus, we are called to care for one another in times of need. The apostle Paul wrote, “Encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). This is not a task for the experts or the spiritually elite, but for every believer.

Feeling Weak? You’re Qualified!

If you feel inadequate to help others, especially those with complex problems, don’t worry. Your sense of weakness is actually a qualification. The Lord specializes in using people who feel weak in themselves. When we acknowledge our limitations, we are more likely to approach others with humility and compassion.

The Basics of Help and Encouragement

So, how do we care for one another? First, we must move towards the person in need. This can be the hardest step, but it’s essential. We must also listen to their story and let them know that we have them on our heart. Sometimes, simply being present and showing that we care is enough.

Praying for Others

If we want to go further, we can ask, “Could you suggest ways that I could pray for you?” This question shows that we are genuinely interested in their well-being and willing to take their concerns to God. When we pray for others, we give them a great gift – the knowledge that they are not alone and that God is working on their behalf.

Growing in Love and Words

Of course, there is always more we can do. We can ask our pastor for book recommendations on suffering, seek advice from others, and continue to grow in our love and words. Expertise is not what makes us adequate helpers; faith, love, and a desire to grow are sufficient.

A Final Word

As believers, we have a unique opportunity to care for one another in times of need. Let us take this calling seriously and move towards those who are hurting. May we be vessels of God’s love and compassion, bringing hope and healing to those around us.

Sincerely,
Edward T. Welch
