Redeeming Work: A Biblical Perspective

As Christians, we often struggle to find meaning and purpose in our work. We may view our jobs as a necessary evil or a means to a paycheck, rather than as an opportunity to serve God and others. But what if our work was more than just a job? What if it was a way to reflect God’s character and bring glory to Him?

In Romans 12:1-2, Paul writes, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Working for God’s Glory

So, how can we work in a way that brings glory to God? Here are a few principles from the New Testament:

1. Work to please God: In the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), Jesus commends initiative, diligence, and savvy attempts to earn interest on one’s money. We should strive to please God in our work, using our skills and abilities to the best of our ability.
2. Do all for God’s glory: In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul writes, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” We should seek to bring glory to God in every aspect of our lives, including our work.
3. Do all in Christ’s name: In Colossians 3:17, Paul writes, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” We should seek to honor Christ in our work, doing everything in His name and for His sake.

Working for the Benefit of Others

But working for God’s glory is not just about our individual relationship with Him. It’s also about serving others and bringing benefit to those around us. Here are a few ways we can do that:

1. Follow Paul’s example of hard work: In 1 Corinthians 9, Paul writes about how he worked hard to support himself and others, even though he had the right to be supported by the church. We should strive to follow his example, working hard to support ourselves and others.
2. Support the ministry: In 1 Corinthians 9:14, Paul writes, “In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.” We should support those who minister the gospel, using our resources to further the kingdom of God.
3. Share with the needy: In Ephesians 4:28, Paul writes, “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.” We should work hard so that we can share with those in need, using our resources to bless others.

Conclusion

As Christians, we should strive to work in a way that reflects God’s character and brings honor to Him.
