The Challenges of Discipling in Today’s Church
As Christian leaders, we often emphasize the importance of discipling – personally caring for and nurturing individuals to maturity and fruitfulness. However, despite this emphasis, few leaders are actively discipling others. There are several reasons for this discrepancy.
A Consumerist Approach to Church
One major obstacle is the consumerist approach that has infiltrated many churches. People attend church expecting a good program, music, preaching, and other attractions, but often resist any attempt to invade their personal lives. This can lead to a double life, where individuals appear fine on the surface but struggle with sin, problems, or discouragement in private.

We need to prioritize our relationship with God and ensure that our primary satisfaction comes from Him, not from our ministry. Despite the challenges, discipling can be a richly rewarding experience. It allows us to invest in the lives of others, share in their struggles and triumphs, and deepen our own relationship with God. As we pour into the lives of others, we can experience spiritual refreshment and growth.

So how can we disciple effectively in today’s church? Here are a few practical strategies:

- Avoid paying special attention to disciplees in larger group settings
- Encourage disciplees to socialize with those outside their group
- Prioritize prayer and battling for the souls of individuals
