Defining a True Church
In a world where countless institutions claim to be churches, it’s essential to discern what truly constitutes a church. The Bible warns of “synagogues of Satan” (Rev. 2:9; 3:9), emphasizing the need for careful evaluation.
The Foundation of a True Church
The New Testament church, as described in Acts 2, was built on the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. From this foundation, we can identify three primary characteristics that distinguish a true church.
Characteristic 1: Preaching the Word of God
Jesus commanded his disciples to teach others to observe all that he had commanded (Matt. 28:19). The preaching of God’s word is central to the definition of a church. Sadly, many churches have strayed from this core principle, prioritizing entertainment and drama over biblical teaching.
Characteristic 2: Proclaiming the True Gospel
Closely tied to the preaching of God’s word is the proclamation of the true gospel. The church should be a place where men and women are constantly reminded of God’s plan for reconciling sinners to himself through the person and work of Christ.
Characteristic 3: Administering Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
The administration of baptism and the Lord’s Supper are essential components of a true church. These ordinances symbolize the believer’s entry into the church and their ongoing participation in the life of Christ.
Discipline and Accountability
A true church must also exercise discipline and accountability among its members. This involves warning and urging those who stray from godliness and truth to repent, with the goal of restoring them to a healthy spiritual life.
The Marks of a True Church
In summary, a true church is characterized by:
- Preaching the word of God
- Proclaiming the true gospel
- Administering baptism and the Lord’s Supper
- Exercising discipline and accountability
Where these marks are present, you can confidently say that you have found a true church on earth.
The Importance of Church Discipline
Church discipline is not a human concept, but a divine one. It is essential for maintaining the health and purity of the church, and for upholding the reputation of Christ.
Growing a Church that Loves God’s Word
To grow a church that values the Bible, three things are essential:
- A deep conviction that the Bible is worth studying over a lifetime
- A commitment to teaching and preaching the word of God
- A culture of love and accountability among members
By focusing on these key principles, churches can cultivate a deep love for God’s word and become a vibrant, thriving community of believers.
