In a world where self-importance reigns supreme, a humble leader emerged to flip the script. With the weight of divine authority, Jesus chose to don a servant’s towel, pouring water into a basin to wash the dusty feet of his followers. This act of radical humility was a declaration of war against the status quo, where the mighty ruled and the meek served.
The disciples were stunned, for no one of Jesus’ stature had ever stooped so low. Yet, he didn’t let the expectations of others dictate his actions. He came to serve, not to be served. In a few short hours, he would demonstrate the ultimate act of service: surrendering to the cross.
As he wiped the feet of his friends, Jesus imparted a lesson that would change the course of history. “You ought to wash each other’s feet,” he said. “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” This was no fleeting gesture; it was a way of life. Unconditional service, born from a heart that loves, was the hallmark of Jesus’ ministry.
In a world where self-preservation is the norm, we’re called to emulate the servant-heartedness of our Lord. It’s not about grand gestures or occasional acts of charity; it’s a lifestyle of surrender, where love compels us to serve without expectation of reward.
Lord, forgive us for losing sight of this radical way of living. Help us to shed our self-centeredness and don the towel of humility, that we might follow in the footsteps of the One who served us first.
