As I wandered through the bustling streets, I stumbled upon a small oasis amidst the chaos. A humble sign above a quaint kiosk read “Refreshment Stand,” beckoning weary travelers to come and indulge. The aroma of sweet treats and refreshing drinks wafted through the air, enticing passersby to pause and rejuvenate. But as I reflected on the fleeting nature of these earthly delights, I couldn’t help but think of a deeper kind of refreshment – one that quenches the soul.
In the Scriptures, we find the apostle Paul expressing gratitude to his friend Philemon for revitalizing his spirit. Jesus, too, extended an invitation to His followers to step away from the hustle and bustle and find rest in Him. This kind of refreshment isn’t just a temporary fix; it’s a profound sense of calm and peace that permeates every fiber of our being.
I’m fortunate to have encountered this kind of refreshment in my own life, courtesy of two dear friends. We meet regularly, sharing stories, laughter, and tears over steaming cups of coffee. In these moments, time stands still, and I’m reminded that true refreshment comes not from external sources, but from the gentle whispers of the Savior. My friends, in their own unique ways, offer me a glimpse of Christ’s calming presence, soothing my soul and granting me rest.
As I reflect on these encounters, I’m struck by the realization that refreshment is not only a gift we receive from God, but also one we can extend to others. It’s the gentle word of encouragement, the listening ear, or the comforting embrace that calms the storms of life. May we be attentive to those around us who crave this kind of refreshment, and may we be willing vessels to pour out God’s soothing balm upon their weary hearts.
