Prayers for Anxiety and Worry

Anxiety has a way of arriving uninvited. It shows up at three in the morning with a list of what-ifs, or in the middle of a workday when a worry you thought you had set down quietly picks itself back up. If that sounds familiar, you are in good company, and you are not failing at faith. Scripture is full of people who felt afraid, overwhelmed, and unsure, and who brought exactly that to God.

This page gathers verses and prayers for anxious and worried hearts. The Bible does not tell us to pretend we feel calm. It invites us to hand over what is heavy: "in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." That is an invitation to honesty. You can tell God precisely what you are afraid of, in your own words, as many times as you need to.

A simple way to use this page is to read one verse slowly and then turn it into a sentence of your own. Breathe out, say what is weighing on you, and repeat the verse that stays with you. Peace tends to arrive in small increments rather than all at once, and returning to the same verse day after day is not repetition for its own sake. It is how a promise slowly becomes something you lean on.

A gentle note: if anxiety is constant, disrupts your sleep or daily life, or is mixed with thoughts of harming yourself, please speak with a doctor, a counselor, or a trusted pastor as well as praying. Asking for help is a wise and faithful act, and prayer and care work well together. The verses below are quoted from the King James Version, and the articles at the bottom offer more encouragement and practical help.

A short prayer

Lord, you know what is on my mind tonight. I name my worries one by one and place them in your hands, because you care for me. Quiet my thoughts, steady my breathing, and give me the next small step. Let your peace, which I cannot explain, guard my heart. Amen.
