Prayers of Gratitude and Thanksgiving

Gratitude is easy when things are going well and surprisingly hard when they are not, which is exactly why the Bible keeps asking for it. Scripture does not treat thanksgiving as a mood. It treats it as a practice, something we choose and rehearse, and something that changes how we see our days even when circumstances stay the same.

The Psalms are full of thanks, often spoken by people in the middle of difficulty. They thank God for his steady love, for rescue, for daily provision, and simply for who he is. Paul tells the early Christians to give thanks in everything, which is a very different thing from giving thanks for everything. It means looking for the gift that is present even in a hard season.

A small habit can make this real. At the end of the day, name three specific things you are thankful for, and say them to God out loud or write them down. Be specific: not just family, but the call that came on a tired afternoon. Over a few weeks many people notice that their attention shifts, and that they begin to spot good things as they happen rather than only afterwards.

A short prayer

Father, thank you. For breath, for food, for people who love me, and for mercies I did not notice until now. Teach me to see what I have already been given, and to say so. Let a thankful heart shape my day. Amen.
