Bible Verses for Grief and Loss

Grief is the cost of love, and there is no tidy way through it. Whether you have lost a parent, a spouse, a child, a friend, or a dream you carried for years, the ache can arrive in waves: quiet one hour, overwhelming the next. If you are here because you are hurting, we are sorry, and we are glad you came.

The Bible does not rush the grieving. Jesus himself wept at the tomb of a friend, even knowing what he was about to do. The Psalms give us permission to cry out, to ask why, and to sit in silence with God when words run out. Nothing in Scripture suggests that sorrow means weak faith. It suggests that God draws near to those whose hearts are broken.

The verses on this page speak to different moments in loss: the first shock, the long middle stretch when others have moved on, and the hope of reunion and restoration that Christians hold. You may find that one verse is all you can take in today. That is enough. Read it aloud if you can, and let it be a place to rest rather than a task to complete.

If you are supporting someone who is grieving, these verses work well in cards, messages, and prayers, and the articles below include guidance on simply being present. And if grief has become so heavy that you cannot function, or you are having thoughts of ending your life, please reach out to a doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line right away, and to someone in your family or church who can sit with you. Quotations here are from the King James Version.

A short prayer

God of all comfort, I am carrying more than I can hold. Stay close to me in the quiet and in the tears. Hold the one I have lost in your care, and hold me too. Teach me to grieve honestly and to hope again, in your time. Amen.
