The Elusive Dream: Why We Struggle to Rest
Millions of Americans toss and turn at night, longing for a good night’s sleep. You might be one of them. Interestingly, humans aren’t the only creatures struggling to catch some Z’s. Sheep, those gentle, woolly animals, also have trouble dozing off. But why?
The Sheep’s Dilemma
Sheep require a specific set of circumstances to drift off to dreamland. Their environment must be predator-free, and their flock must be harmonious. Without these ideal conditions, sheep simply can’t sleep. They need guidance, protection, and reassurance – they need a shepherd. And without a shepherd, they’re left feeling anxious and awake.
The Human Paradox
Similarly, humans struggle to rest without a sense of security and peace. We, too, need guidance and reassurance. Psalm 23:2 reminds us that our Shepherd, God, is the one who leads us to green pastures and still waters, where we can finally relax. It’s not about us trying harder or being more disciplined; it’s about recognizing our Shepherd’s active role in our lives.
The Promise of Peace
Isaiah 26:3 offers a comforting promise: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You.” When we focus on our Shepherd, we can finally find the rest we’ve been craving. By shifting our attention to God, we can quiet our minds and calm our hearts, allowing us to sleep peacefully.
Finding Rest in the Shepherd
So, the next time you find yourself lying awake at night, remember that you’re not alone. And more importantly, remember that you don’t have to be. Look to your Shepherd, and let Him guide you to those green pastures and still waters. With your eyes fixed on Him, you’ll find the rest you’ve been searching for.
