The Gentle Knock at the Door of Our Hearts
Jesus stands at the door of our lives, knocking gently, waiting for us to respond. His soft whispers can be easily drowned out by the noise of our daily routines, but He patiently waits for us to acknowledge Him.
A Morning Interruption
One Saturday morning, I was interrupted by solicitors at my doorstep, ringing the doorbell, knocking, and shouting out greetings. I had a lot on my plate that day and didn’t want to be bothered, so I ignored them. I knew they would eventually move on if I just waited. But what if it were Jesus standing at my door, knocking softly?
The Choice to Answer
Just as I had the power to choose whether to answer the solicitors or ignore them, we have the same power when it comes to Jesus’ gentle knocks on the door of our hearts. He doesn’t force His way in; instead, He waits for us to invite Him in. Sometimes, His knocks come through the people around us who are struggling, homeless, and alone. When we reach out to them, we are, in effect, answering Jesus’ knock and allowing Him to enter our lives.
The Selfless Heart
When we receive Jesus into our lives, God places a selfless heart within us. This heart is designed to welcome Jesus in, to hunger for time with Him, and to open the door to our lives. But we often get caught up in our own desires and distractions, blocking out Jesus’ gentle knocks.
A Prayer to Listen
Lord, help me to stop ignoring Your knocks at the door of my heart. Let Your gentle and persistent whispers be a reminder to slow down and pay attention to You. May I welcome You in with a heart that hungers to spend time with You, and may You open the door to heaven’s treasures for me.
