Cultivating Gratitude in the Darkest Moments
When life takes a turn for the worse, it’s easy to lose sight of the importance of gratitude. Becky, like many of us, had heard the phrase “have an attitude of gratitude” but struggled to apply it in the midst of hardship. Her heart felt heavy, and despair seemed to lurk around every corner.
The Power of Scripture
In her darkest moment, Becky turned to her Bible, searching for comfort and guidance. Her eyes landed on a familiar verse in 1 Thessalonians 6:18, which reads, “In everything give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” The phrase “in everything” stood out to her, and she realized that it didn’t say “for everything.” This subtle distinction sparked a profound question: What does it mean to be thankful in a difficult circumstance, rather than for it?
Unpacking the Meaning of Gratitude
As Becky pondered this question, the Holy Spirit began to reveal the answer. She realized that she could be thankful for God’s faithfulness, even in the midst of uncertainty. She recalled times when God had carried her through difficult seasons, and how His strength had sustained her. (Matthew 11:28) She also remembered that God promises to work all things out for good, even in the most troubling circumstances. (Romans 8:28)
A Shift in Perspective
With this newfound understanding, Becky’s heart began to lift. She saw that being thankful in hard times wasn’t about being grateful for the hardship itself, but about trusting in God’s character and faithfulness. She recognized that it was in these difficult moments that God’s character would be proven over and over again.
A Prayer of Gratitude
Becky’s reflection culminated in a heartfelt prayer: “Father God, I’m thankful for my blessings, but it’s hard to be thankful in the tough times. Thank you for understanding my struggles. Thank you for showing me that when I can’t be thankful for the hard stuff, I can still be thankful in it – because You are faithful and will see me through. Help me to lean on Your strength, wisdom, and care. Thank you that You will build a track record of faithfulness in my life. You enable me to be thankful in hard times because You are my God, and I can trust You with my life – even in the hard stuff! In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.”
