Bookending Your Day with God: A Powerful Prayer Practice

Embracing the Eternal Presence

The Lord God declares, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, who is, and was, and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8). Let these powerful words resonate deep within your soul. Don’t they bring you comfort and reassurance?

The Bookends of Life

In the Greek alphabet, Alpha represents the beginning, while Omega marks the end. God is proclaiming Himself as the origin and culmination of our daily lives and eternal existence. It’s a beautiful reminder to invite Christ into our lives at the dawn of each new day and to seek His blessing as we close our eyes at night.

Sandwiching Our Day in Prayer

We’ve all heard the wisdom of sandwiching our day in prayer, acknowledging God’s presence at the start and finish of each day. This simple yet profound practice can transform our lives. As the saying goes, “A life knotted in prayer at both ends won’t unravel.” By bookending our day with prayer, we create a sense of continuity and connection with our Creator.

The Power of Acknowledgment

I must admit, there are times when I try to tackle my day without inviting God into the picture. And there are nights when I let my worries consume me instead of surrendering them to Him. But when I make a conscious effort to begin and end my day with God, I notice a significant difference. The challenges I face may not disappear, but their impact on me is less intense. I become more aware of God’s presence throughout the day, knowing He was with me a heartbeat ago, is with me now, and will be with me in the moments to come.

The Discipline of Prayer

My prayer is that I may cultivate the desire and discipline to make God my first and last thought each day. When I do, I’m more attuned to His loving presence, guidance, and wisdom. I’m reminded to praise Him when I arise and thank Him when I retire for the night. And in between, I’m comforted by the knowledge that I can rely on Him to be there, always.

A Week-Long Challenge

For the next seven days, I invite you to join me in a simple yet powerful experiment. Consciously make an effort to pray as soon as you wake up and again right before you go to sleep. Observe how this practice affects your attitude and outlook. Do you notice a shift towards joy and positivity?
