Finding Courage in the Face of Fear
When faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and afraid. But what if we could tap into a deeper reservoir of strength and courage? The Bible reminds us that “there is a greater power with us than with him” (2 Chronicles 32:7-8a).
The Power of Courage
Many years ago, I struggled with sharing my faith with others, fearing I wasn’t prepared or knowledgeable enough. A wise friend reminded me that courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the ability to push past it and do what’s right. This definition resonated deeply, and I began to see courage as a muscle that could be developed and strengthened.
A Biblical Example of Courage
In 2 Chronicles, King Hezekiah and the people of Judah faced a daunting foe: the Assyrian army, led by Sennacherib. The nation was paralyzed by fear, but Hezekiah called his people to action and prayer. Together, they prepared for battle, blocked the enemy’s water supply, and strengthened Jerusalem’s walls. They cried out to God for deliverance, and He responded by sending an angel to defeat the Assyrians. God’s power was glorified, and the nation was preserved.
Applying Courage to Our Lives
Are you facing circumstances that feel like a “vast army” besieging your life? Remember that the same God who delivered Judah is with you today. Take a deep breath, and choose to trust Him. Present your life, with all its complexities, to God. Ask for wisdom to recognize your part in the situation and for God to work on your behalf.
A Prayer for Courage
“God, I choose to trust you, and I thank you for your presence with me. I present my life, in all its circumstances, to you. I believe you have a good plan for me. I ask for wisdom to recognize what I must do and to understand what is in your hands to do on my behalf. Amen.”
