Unmasking God’s Unwavering Love: 3 Misconceptions Debunked

Unwavering Love: Debunking Misconceptions About God’s Affection

A Lifelong Quest for Understanding

The Bible reminds us that “the LORD will fulfill his purpose for me: your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever” (Psalm 138:8, NRSV). Yet, despite this promise, many of us struggle to grasp the depth of God’s love. We’ve grown up reciting “For God so loved the world” and singing “Jesus loves me this I know,” but somehow, doubts creep in.

Three Common Misconceptions

One major obstacle is our tendency to misconstrue God’s love. We often think that if God truly loves us, He’ll shield us from painful experiences. However, Jesus never promised a trouble-free life. Instead, He said, “in this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). God uses every experience, good or bad, to shape us for eternity.

Another misconception is that we need to earn God’s love through our achievements. The Bible refutes this idea, stating that we’re loved not for what we do, but for who we are – beloved children of God and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). God’s love isn’t conditional; it’s a constant, unwavering presence in our lives.

The Illusion of Feelings

Feelings can be deceiving, influenced by our circumstances, mood, and sleep quality. They’re a reflection of our thoughts, which is why it’s crucial to focus on God’s Word. By doing so, we tune our hearts to receive God’s love. As David wrote, “But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments” (Psalm 103:17).

Tuning Our Hearts

Fearing the LORD and obeying His commandments isn’t about earning God’s love; it’s about preparing our hearts to receive it. We need to turn our hearts God-ward, allowing Him to make His love real to us. In doing so, we’ll come to understand that God’s love is an eternal, unwavering force that guides us through life’s ups and downs.

A Heartfelt Prayer

Dear God, thank You that You love me always. I want to tune my heart to receive Your love. May I come to understand the depth of Your affection and rest in the knowledge that Your love endures forever.
