Treasures of the Heart: Unwrapping Memories of God’s Goodness

Unwrapping the Gift of Memories

As I rummage through my childhood treasure trove, I’m reminded of the precious keepsakes that held sentimental value. A vintage dollar coin from my mom, a cherished chapstick (which I pretended was lipstick!), and other trinkets that seemed insignificant to others, but were priceless to me. Similarly, Mary, the mother of Jesus, had her own treasure box – not filled with material possessions, but with memories of her son’s life and how it intersected with hers.

A Heart Full of Treasures

In Luke 2:19, we’re given a glimpse into Mary’s treasure box, where she stored away moments that mattered most. She “treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” But what exactly did she treasure? Was it the angelic visitation announcing her virgin birth? The miraculous encounter with Elizabeth, her elderly relative, who was also expecting a child? Or perhaps it was the first flutter of life within her womb, as she felt her baby move?

A Lifetime of Memories

As Jesus grew, Mary’s treasure box continued to overflow with memories. The humble birth in a manger, surrounded by rustic shepherds and regal wise men. The surprising discovery of Jesus teaching in the synagogue, astounding the leaders of his day. The miraculous transformation of water into wine at a wedding feast. Each memory served as a testament to God’s power and presence in their lives.

Comfort in Turbulent Times

I wonder if, in the years that followed, Mary drew comfort from these memories as her life became increasingly tumultuous. As her son faced persecution and hatred from the Jewish community, did she revisit these treasures to remind herself that God was still in control? Did she find solace in the knowledge that God had a plan, even when it seemed incomprehensible?

Reflecting on God’s Goodness

This Christmas season, I encourage you to pause and reflect on God’s goodness in your life. Take time to ponder the moments when you’ve seen His hand at work. Mark those times in your heart, just as Mary did, and revisit them often. Let the memories of God’s faithfulness be a source of comfort, joy, and strength in the face of uncertainty.
