Calm in Chaos: 8 Bible Verses to Overcome Fear and Anxiety

Fear Less, Trust More: Finding Calm in Uncertain Times

When uncertainty creeps in, fear can quickly take hold, affecting every aspect of our lives. It’s a feeling we’re all too familiar with – lying awake at night, worrying about the what-ifs and how-will-I’s of tomorrow and beyond. But fear doesn’t have to control us.

Recognizing the Grip of Fear

Recently, I found myself trapped in a cycle of anxiety, unsure of how to break free. But a timely conversation with a friend helped me realize that fear was manipulating my thoughts and actions. As soon as I acknowledged its grip, I turned to a higher power for comfort and guidance.

Finding Comfort in Scripture

In times of uncertainty, Scripture provides a sense of calm and reassurance. I turned to my favorite verses, which never fail to bring me peace, and searched for new ones to add to my arsenal against fear. God knows exactly what we need to hear, and when.

8 Verses to Turn to When Fear Creeps In

  • Psalm 56:3 NLT: “But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.”
  • Isaiah 41:10 NLT: “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”
  • Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT: “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
  • Daniel 10:19 NLT: “Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!”
  • John 14:26-27 CEV: “But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you. I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give.”
  • Psalm 23:4 NLT: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.”
  • Joshua 1:9 NLT: “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
  • Acts 2:25-26 CEV: “What David said are really the words of Jesus, ‘I always see the Lord near me, and I will not be afraid with him at my right side. Because of this, my heart will be glad, my words will be joyful, and I will live in hope.’”

A Prayer for Guidance

If you’re struggling to find peace in uncertain times, consider saying this prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I want to trust you from now on. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life. Make me be the person You want me to be. Thank you for enabling me to trust you in these uncertain times. Amen.”

Or try this alternative prayer:

“Dear God, today I bring you my life, my hopes, my dreams, my deepest yearnings … You know me intimately. You knew me even before I was formed in the womb. You called me into this world to do good and live the life I was uniquely and specifically created for. I ask for Courage and Wisdom to live this life–the life of my dreams. Show me where to start and help me be open to hearing your Voice today. I ask for a greater consciousness of your Presence, today and every day of my life. Amen.”
