Finding Peace in Uncertain Times: A Christian Response to Crisis

Finding Peace in the Midst of Crisis

As the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and anxious. The constant stream of news, the empty shelves, and the closures of public spaces can be paralyzing. But as followers of Jesus, we are called to live differently, even in the darkest of times.

A Call to Sacrificial Living

We often quote scripture’s “fear nots,” but when faced with uncertainty and fear, we realize that those words need to move from our heads to our hearts. We are not immune to the struggles that our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world face daily. We, too, are called to live sacrificially, so that others may find healing, prosperity, and peace with God.

The Power of Vulnerability

Walter Brueggemann’s words about Jesus’ encounter with Nicodemus take on new meaning in these uncertain times. We are called to start over, to be reborn, and to become as vulnerable and innocent as a little child. We must let go of our self-sufficiency and dependence on worldly things, and instead, rely on the wonder of God’s gift.

A Lesson in Dependence

As we wash our hands, a simple act of obedience, we acknowledge our vulnerability and dependence on God. We recognize that our help comes from the Lord, and in that truth, we find peace. We can then reach out to our fearful neighbors with love and compassion.

A Historical Example

Eusebius, a bishop and historian of the early church, wrote about Christians during the deadly plague. They tended to the dying, buried the dead, and distributed bread to the hungry. They showed the world what it means to live out their faith in the midst of crisis.

A Prayer for Peace

Father, thank you for the free offer of peace in the midst of chaos. Grant me the wisdom and strength to walk in that peace, so that others may be curious about you. May I be a beacon of hope in these dark times, and may your love shine through me.
