Embracing the Gentle Humility of God
As we journey through life, we often find ourselves searching for rest and peace. In Matthew 11:29, Jesus invites us to “take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” These words, penned by J. I. Packer in his devotional “Knowing God Through the Year,” stopped me in my tracks. The Creator of the universe, the all-knowing, all-wise, holy, and supreme Ruler, describes Himself as gentle and humble. This revelation is both surprising and refreshing.
A Leader Like No Other
In a world where leaders often exude confidence and authority, Jesus’ humility stands out. He doesn’t flaunt His power or importance; instead, He extends an invitation to come to Him. This gentle humility is a rare quality in leaders, especially those who have achieved great power or success. It’s a characteristic that sets Jesus apart and makes Him approachable.
Reflecting God’s Gentle Humility
As we reflect on Jesus’ words, we must ask ourselves: Are we gentle and humble? Do people feel peaceful in our presence? Unfortunately, gentleness is not a trait we can manufacture on our own. However, the Holy Spirit can produce this fruit in us, along with love, joy, peace, kindness, and more.
Inviting the Holy Spirit to Lead
If we desire to embody Jesus’ gentle humility, we must surrender our lives to the Holy Spirit. We can ask Him to take control and transform us into the people we aspire to be. Here’s a prayer to guide you:
“Dear Father, I need You. I acknowledge that I’ve been directing my own life, resulting in sin against You. Thank You for forgiving my sins through Christ’s death on the cross. I invite Christ to take His rightful place on the throne of my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit, as You commanded and promised. Thank You for directing my life and filling me with Your Spirit.”
