Liturgy: A Path to Deeper Faith Discover how liturgy can enrich your spiritual journey, providing words in times of need, shaping your thoughts and actions, connecting you to the global Christian community, and cultivating holy habits.

Finding Life in Liturgy

As I reflect on my journey to Christ, I am reminded of the profound impact that liturgy has had on my life. Growing up, I was surrounded by the rhythms of Sunday worship – the songs, prayers, and readings that shaped my understanding of God and His Word.

A Foundation for Faith

One song in particular, the Sanctus, still echoes in my mind. Based on the seraphim’s hymns in Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8, it declares:

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.”

For 18 years, I sang these words, relearning the gospel every Sunday. I heard the confession of Jesus’ salvific work, recited the historic Christian creeds, and prayed the Lord’s Prayer. These habits formed a theological compass in my heart, orienting me to the truths of the Christian faith.

A Journey of Discovery

As I grew older, my understanding of liturgy evolved. I began to appreciate its richness and depth, particularly through my studies at Wheaton College. I discovered how liturgy could be a powerful tool for spiritual formation, shaping my thoughts, words, and actions.

Why Liturgy Matters

So, why do I believe liturgy is essential for Christian growth? Here are four reasons:

  1. Liturgy gives us words when our own words fail us. In moments of joy, sorrow, or confusion, liturgy provides a voice for our emotions, helping us communicate with God.
  2. Liturgy is formative. Through repetition, liturgical rhythms shape our thoughts, words, and actions, equipping us for life as followers of Christ.
  3. Liturgy connects us to the broader Christian community. When we use traditional liturgical forms, we join our voices to the global and historic body of Christ, reminding us that our faith is not lived in isolation.
  4. Liturgy helps develop holy habits. Regular spiritual practices shape our souls, cultivating a deep devotion to God and an attentiveness to His presence in our lives.

A Resource for Worship

Christian liturgy is a rich resource for worship, offering prayers, patterns, Scriptures, and songs that help us deepen our relationship with God. As I look back on my journey, I am grateful for the role that liturgy has played in shaping my faith. My hope is that it will serve you in the same way, drawing you closer to God and nurturing your growth in grace.
