Embracing a Life of Obedience
In the stillness of the moment, I felt the weight of Jesus’ words: “I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me” (John 14:31). The word “exactly” stood out, and I couldn’t help but wonder, Is this really possible? Can I truly obey God without compromise or resistance?
As I sought answers, I turned to Jesus’ example. His life was a testament to complete obedience, motivated by love for the Father. Every step, every word, and every miracle was guided by the Father’s will. In John 5:30, Jesus said, “By myself I can do nothing… I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.” This posture of obedience is one that Jesus desires for all of us.
A Relationship Built on Love and Obedience
In John 14:1-15, Jesus comforts his disciples, explaining that their close relationship with him will continue even after he’s gone. He declares that loving him means obeying him – not out of obligation, but as an act of love. The Holy Spirit will guide and remind us of Jesus’ teachings, bringing peace that surpasses the world’s understanding (John 14:26b, 27).
As I reflected on these truths, I realized that exact obedience to the Father keeps us closely tied to his power, even when we’re tempted to wander. It’s a dependence on God for life, power, strength, guidance, and instruction.
A Prayer of Surrender
Father God, I love you and desire to obey you without compromise or resistance. Draw me close, give me ears to hear your instructions, and help me obey. I’m completely dependent on you for life, power, strength, guidance, and instructions. Above all else, may my desire be to do your will for your glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
In embracing a life of obedience, we find freedom in surrender. We discover that loving God means trusting him completely, even when the path ahead is uncertain. As we walk in obedience, we experience the peace and joy that comes from being closely tied to the Father’s heart.
