Finding Hope in Uncertainty: A Firm Foundation in Christ

Finding Solid Ground in Uncertain Times

We live in a fragile world, where sin and sickness can throw our lives into chaos. But there is hope. In the midst of uncertainty, we can find a firm foundation in Christ.

The Power of Hope

Hope is not just a feeling; it’s a powerful force that can change our lives. As John Piper notes, “Hope is power. Present power. Hope keeps people from killing themselves—now. It helps people get out of bed and go to work—now.” Hope gives us the strength to face each day, even in the darkest of times.

God’s Sovereignty in the Midst of Suffering

But how do we reconcile God’s goodness with the suffering we see in the world? Piper reminds us that “Not one sparrow falls but by God’s plan. Not one virus moves but by God’s plan. This is meticulous sovereignty.” God is in control, even when we don’t understand what’s happening.

The Comfort of God’s Word

In times of crisis, we need comfort that goes beyond human words. We need the comfort of God’s Word. As Piper says, “No man can comfort our souls in this pandemic the way God can. His comfort is unshakable. It is the comfort of a great, high Rock in the stormy sea.”

Our Sin and God’s Righteousness

We are all sinners, deserving of punishment. But God’s righteousness is not about punishing us; it’s about redeeming us. Piper notes, “The coronavirus, therefore, does not point to unholiness or unrighteousness or lack of goodness in God.”

God’s Purpose in Suffering

So what is God doing in the midst of suffering? Piper suggests that “What God is doing in the coronavirus is showing us—graphically, painfully—that nothing in this world gives the security and satisfaction that we find in the infinite greatness and worth of Jesus.”

Shining a Light in Dark Places

As Christians, we have the opportunity to shine a light in dark places. We can offer hope and comfort to those around us, pointing them to the infinite greatness and worth of Jesus. May we be a source of light in these uncertain times.
