Finding Rest in the Gentle Heart of Jesus

Discover the Heart of Jesus

In a world where we often feel burdened and overwhelmed, Jesus offers us rest. His invitation is simple: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). But what does it mean to come to Jesus, and how can we experience the rest he promises?

A Gentle and Lowly Heart

The Greek word translated “gentle” in Matthew 11:29 is used only three other times in the New Testament. It describes someone who is humble, meek, and kind. This is the heart of Jesus – not harsh or reactionary, but understanding and compassionate. His posture is not one of condemnation, but of open arms.

Accessible and Approachable

The word “lowly” in Matthew 11:29 is often translated “humble” in other passages. But here, it refers to someone who is accessible and approachable. Jesus is not a distant figure, but a friend who invites us to come to him just as we are. No prerequisites, no hoops to jump through – just an open heart.

Rest for the Weary

Jesus’ desire to give us rest outstrips even our own. He doesn’t require us to unburden ourselves or get our lives together before coming to him. Our very burden is what qualifies us to come. And when we do, he promises to give us rest – not as a transaction, but as a gift.

Tender, Open, and Welcoming

This is the heart of Jesus – gentle, lowly, and welcoming. He is tender with us, open to us, and accommodating of our weaknesses. He understands us and is willing to help us. If we had to say just one thing about who Jesus is, it would be that he is gentle and lowly.

Experiencing the Heart of Jesus

So how can we experience the heart of Jesus for ourselves? By coming to him just as we are, with all our burdens and weaknesses. By trusting in his promise to give us rest. And by remembering that his heart is always gentle, lowly, and welcoming.
