Morning Prayers

The first few minutes of the day set a tone. Many people reach for a phone before their feet touch the floor, and by breakfast their minds are already crowded with other people's news and demands. A morning prayer is a small, deliberate way to turn that around: before anything else asks for your attention, you give the day to God.

Scripture offers plenty of precedent. The Psalms speak of lifting prayers in the morning and of finding fresh mercy at sunrise. Jesus himself is described as rising early to pray in a quiet place. None of this requires an hour or a special setting. A few honest sentences at the edge of the bed, in the car, or over coffee can anchor a whole day.

If you are not sure what to say, borrow. Read one of the verses below slowly, then speak it back to God in your own words: thank him for the new day, name what you are facing, and ask for what you need. Many people find a simple shape helpful: gratitude, surrender, and request. Thank, hand over, ask. It takes about two minutes and works on busy days precisely because it is short.

Do not worry if your mornings are chaotic, with small children, shift work, or a long commute. The goal is not a perfect routine but a regular turning of the heart toward God. If you miss a day, begin again the next. The verses are from the King James Version, and the articles at the bottom of the page offer more ideas for starting your day well.

A short prayer

Good morning, Lord. Thank you for this new day and for the breath in my lungs. I give you my plans, my worries, and my time. Guide my words, steady my temper, and make me kind. Help me to notice you today, in the ordinary moments. Amen.
