The Spiritual Battle: Understanding the Enemy and God’s Armor
As Christians, we are engaged in a spiritual battle against the devil and his minions. The Bible warns us to be sober-minded and watchful, for our adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). But we are not defenseless; God has provided us with armor to stand against the schemes of the devil.
The Devil’s Schemes
The devil is a cunning and deceitful enemy who seeks to lead us astray from God’s truth. He is the father of lies and has been sinning from the beginning (John 8:44). His ultimate goal is to destroy God’s people and undermine God’s plan of salvation. But God is not caught off guard; He has a plan to defeat the devil and his minions.
God’s Plan of Victory
In Genesis 3:15, God declares war on the serpent (the devil) and promises that one day He will bruise the serpent’s head. This promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God has defeated the devil and his power over humanity.
Putting on God’s Armor
To stand against the devil’s schemes, we need to put on God’s armor. In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul describes the armor of God as follows:
- Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might
- Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil
- Stand firm with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace
- Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one
- Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
