Praying for Your Child’s Faith
As a Christian parent, there is no greater desire than to see your child come to know and love Jesus Christ. But how can you encourage their faith and spiritual growth? One powerful way is through prayer.
Praying for Spiritual Hearing
In a world filled with competing voices, it’s essential to pray that your child will hear the voice of the Good Shepherd above all others (John 10:2-6). Ask God to give them a spirit of humility, willing to receive the word as it is read, preached, and taught. Pray, “Father, they have ears, let them hear.”
Praying for Spiritual Sight
Not only do our children need to hear, but they also need to see. Pray that they would possess vision beyond what lies before their eyes, lifted higher above carnal appetites and instant gratification. Ask God to grant them eyes that see eternal things, finding satisfaction in things that last forever. Pray, “Father, grant them eyes that see.”
Praying for Spiritual Understanding
Our children need to not only hear and see but also understand. Pray for their minds to be inquisitive about spiritual things, wrestling with spiritual truths. Ask God to sow His truths deeply and eternally in their minds, sealing eternal deep truths in their vigorous minds. Pray, “Father, sow your truths deeply and eternally in them.”
Praying for a Soft Heart
The Lord alone can take a heart of stone and give a heart of flesh (Ezek. 36:26). Pray that He would prepare the ground for the sowing of the seed of the gospel, making their hearts soft to the penetrating truth of His word. Pray, “Father, make their hearts soft to the penetrating truth of your word.”
Praying for Affections
When our children glimpse the beauty of God’s glory, they cannot help but fall in love with Him. Pray that the Lord would grip their affections, granting them to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in their inner being. Ask God to fill them with all the fullness of God, knowing the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. Pray, “Father, may my child know this incomprehensible love and be moved with love for you.”
Praying for a Life of Faithfulness
We want our children not only to know Christ but to live lives of fruitfulness for Him. Pray for faithfulness, asking God to grant them His mercies anew every morning. Pray, “Father, be steadfast in love towards my child and grant them your mercies anew every morning.”
Comfort and Hope for Christian Parents
Though we cannot guarantee our child’s salvation, God gifts us the blessing of praying for them. Praying for our child provides comfort for our anxious souls, reminding us that our Father is also the God of all salvation. We can trust our children to Him, knowing He holds all this world in His hands. Our child is not absent from His mind, nor hidden from His sight. And as we pray, our child is not absent from His ears. Our God is the God of salvation. Let’s keep praying for our child, because our Father listens to His children.
