The Power of Scent: Uncovering the Fragrance of Faith
As I stepped into my kitchen, I was hit with a pungent smell that seemed to permeate every corner of my home. My investigation led me to the refrigerator, where I discovered a tiny amount of spoiled re-fried beans causing the stench. It was astonishing how such a small amount of food could have such a profound impact on my surroundings.
The Memory of Smell
Smell has a unique ability to transport us back to memories from our past. A whiff of a familiar perfume, the scent of fresh laundry, or the aroma of freshly baked bread can evoke powerful emotions and memories. The Bible also speaks of the fragrance of faith, describing believers as captives of Jesus Christ who spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume (2 Corinthians 2:14).
The Fragrance of Surrender
But have you ever stopped to consider the kind of scent you’re giving off? Is it a sweet fragrance of surrender to Jesus Christ, or a pungent odor of sin hidden in your heart? Holding onto sin is like carrying around a heavy, smelly bag of trash. We often get comfortable with our sinful attitudes and behaviors, unaware that they’re weighing us down and holding us back from experiencing God’s fullness.
The Weight of Sin
It’s easy to wallow in our sin, justifying and excusing it, without realizing the toll it takes on our lives. But when we allow sin to take root, it quickly takes over, and we need to surrender to Jesus Christ, allowing Him to cleanse us and expel the odorous sin from our lives. Just as a refrigerator can’t rid itself of its own smelly contents, we can’t clean up our lives on our own. We need a Savior to rescue us from our depravity and show us the way forward.
Exchanging Trash for Treasure
So, have you given over your bag of trash to your Savior? Have you surrendered those areas in your life that are holding you back from wholeheartedly following Him? What’s stopping you? Exchange that smelly bag of trash for the fragrant aroma of following Jesus – I guarantee you won’t miss it!
