The Power of Perspective: Shifting from Anxiety to Assurance
Unraveling the “What If” Cycle
We’ve all been there – consumed by the perpetual “what if” questions that swirl in our minds. What if this happens? What if that doesn’t happen? What if someone fails to follow through on their promise? These questions can be alluring, but they often lead to anxiety and uncertainty.
A Lesson from the Disciples
Even Jesus’ followers weren’t immune to this line of questioning. They peppered Him with complex, unanswerable queries, seeking reassurance in uncertain times. But Jesus wisely redirected their focus, highlighting the futility of such questioning. To break free from anxiety, we must ask different questions – ones with straightforward answers.
Jesus’ Counterquestions
Consider the poignant questions Jesus posed to His disciples:
- Is your life not more precious than food and clothing? (Matthew 6:25)
- Are you not more valuable to God than the birds He feeds? (Matthew 6:26)
- Can worrying add to your height or life span? (Matthew 6:27)
- If God adorns fleeting grass with beauty, won’t He provide for your needs abundantly? (Matthew 6:30)
The Simple Truth
The disciples knew the answers to these questions, and so do we. Yet, we often get bogged down in hypothetical scenarios, neglecting the unshakeable truths that can bring us peace.
A Shift in Focus
By dwelling on what we already know, we can redirect our attention from our cares to the God who cares. Let’s release the unnecessary burdens we carry and instead, rest in the assurance of God’s provision and love.
