Embracing the Power of Unwavering Faith

As I stood on the Pacific coast, the relentless waves crashing against the shore served as a poignant reminder of life’s turbulent journey. The serene seabirds, oblivious to the powerful forces beneath them, flew effortlessly from rock to rock. The only sounds audible were the thunderous waves and the occasional chirping of the birds. It was a moment of profound tranquility.

The Turbulence of Life

But just hours later, my world was shaken by devastating news. A dear friend’s granddaughter had lost her life in a tragic car accident. Another friend, battling cancer, was taking a turn for the worse. And earlier in the week, we had received news of an acquaintance’s sudden passing. The waves of sorrow crashed against my heart, one after another.

A Beacon of Hope

In the midst of this turmoil, I was reminded of Horatio Spafford’s remarkable story. After facing financial ruin and the loss of his four daughters in a shipwreck, he penned the iconic hymn “It Is Well with My Soul.” As he sailed near the site of the tragedy, he wrote:

“When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
‘It is well, it is well, with my soul.’”

The Power of Trust

Spafford’s remarkable faith was rooted in his deep trust in God. He and his wife had walked closely with Jesus, absorbing His love and learning to rely on Him in both good times and bad. When tragedy struck, they knew that nothing could separate them or their daughters from God’s love.

A Lesson for Us All

We cannot prevent life’s accidents and illnesses, but we can learn to make Christ the center of our lives. By doing so, we can trust Him even in the darkest moments, just as Spafford did. We can learn to say, with conviction, “It is well with my soul.”

A Prayer of Trust

Dear Father, thank you for being always present with us. Help me trust you even when I cannot see your hand at work. May “it is well with my soul” be the daily refrain of my heart, no matter what life brings.
