Finding Comfort in God’s Loving Arms

Finding Comfort in Fearful Times

As a young child, our granddaughter Renee lived with an intense fear of animals. It didn’t matter what kind – big or small, furry or feathered – they all terrified her. We couldn’t understand why, but we knew it was a very real feeling for her.

A Gentle Companion

When Pat, our youngest daughter, brought home a white cat named Ugali, our household dynamics changed. The cat had free rein of the house, and whenever Renee visited, we’d often lock Ugali away in a bedroom to avoid any scares. But occasionally, the curious cat would slip out and wander into the kitchen, sending Renee running for cover.

Seeking Refuge

Renee’s instinct was to flee to the nearest trusted adult, climb onto their lap, and burrow in as close as possible. She’d tuck her feet up tight and make herself as small as she could, seeking comfort and protection in the arms of someone she loved. We didn’t scold or tease her for her fear; instead, we wrapped our arms around her, speaking softly to calm her nerves until she felt brave enough to venture out again.

A Deeper Refuge

As I reflect on those moments, I’m reminded of God’s gentle nature. Just as we comforted Renee, He longs to comfort us in our own fears and anxieties, whether they’re based in reality or simply a product of our imagination. When we come to Him with our fears, He envelops us in His loving arms, whispering words of peace and strength until we’re ready to face the world once more.

Gratitude and Trust

Thank You, Lord, for being our refuge in times of fear, whether those fears are grounded in reality or simply a product of our imagination. Thank You for being our hiding place, our source of comfort and strength. May we learn to trust in Your gentle care, just as Renee trusted in ours. Amen.
