The Fleeting Nature of Novelty
As I settled into my temporary abode, surrounded by the luxury of three bathrooms, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of euphoria when it came to maintaining the sparkling cleanliness of the sinks. It was a far cry from the humble cement slab I had grown accustomed to in Japan. But as the days went by, I began to realize that this sense of excitement was not solely due to the abundance of sinks and bathtubs at my disposal.
The Commonplace Conundrum
Rather, it was the realization that these beautiful sinks, once a novelty, had become an ordinary part of my daily life. This phenomenon is not unique to household fixtures; it’s a universal truth that applies to many aspects of our lives. Whether it’s a new hat, car, house, or job title, the initial thrill of acquisition eventually wears off, leaving us feeling unfulfilled.
The Danger of Complacency
Scripture warns us of the dangers of losing our passion and dedication to our faith, just as we can lose interest in material possessions. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of change that surrounds us, but it’s crucial to remain grounded in our faith and focused on God’s Word.
Timeless Truth
In a world where everything is subject to change, there is one constant that remains unwavering: Jesus. As the hymn so eloquently puts it, “Yesterday, today, forever, Jesus is the same. All may change but Jesus never! Glory to His name.” May we remember to keep our eyes fixed on Him, rather than allowing the fleeting nature of novelty to distract us from what truly matters.
