The Dangers of Self-Reliance
When we think we can handle life on our own, we become vulnerable to attack. Just like the strong man in Luke 11:21-22, we may believe our own strength is enough to protect us, but when faced with a stronger opponent, we can quickly lose ground.
Fear and Betrayal
Peter’s story is a powerful example of this. He confidently declared his loyalty to Jesus, but when faced with fear and uncertainty, he denied knowing Him three times. This wasn’t just a momentary lapse; it was a result of Peter losing sight of his Lord. He had wandered away from Jesus’ presence and was trying to navigate life on his own terms.
The Root of the Problem
Fear played a significant role in Peter’s betrayal. Fear of losing his reputation, fear of responsibility, and fear for his own life all contributed to his denial. But there was another factor at play: self-reliance. Peter had stopped trusting in God and was relying on his own strength. This is a recipe for disaster.
A Lesson from Proverbs
The wisdom of Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” This is a crucial lesson for us today. When we rely on ourselves, we open ourselves up to attack and defeat. But when we trust in God, we can face any challenge with confidence.
The Enemy’s Tactics
Peter himself warns us about the dangers of self-reliance. In 1 Peter 5:8, he writes, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Satan is always on the lookout for those who are trying to go it alone, and he will pounce on any opportunity to destroy us.
Staying Near to God
So how can we avoid falling into this trap? The answer lies in staying near to God. By reading His Word, speaking and listening to Him in prayer, and living in community with His sons and daughters, we can maintain a strong connection with our Lord. As James 4:7-8 reminds us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
The Promise of Protection
When we stay near to God, we have nothing to fear. Isaiah 41:10 promises us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This is a promise we can cling to in times of uncertainty and fear.
The Question We Must Ask
So what is the danger of not staying near God? The answer is clear: when we rely on ourselves, we open ourselves up to attack and defeat. But by staying near to God, we can face any challenge with confidence, knowing that He is our strength and our protector.
