From Solitude to Service: Embracing God’s Unexpected Call

A Life of Unexpected Purpose

Growing up, I was always drawn to solitude. As an only child, I spent most of my days exploring the countryside, lost in thought, or curled up with a good book under the shade of a cedar tree. My mother would often joke that I was hiding from her, and she wasn’t entirely wrong! Even now, my favorite moments are those spent alone, sipping coffee at a quiet café, watching the world go by through the windowpane.

A Call to Serve

But life had other plans. Over 50 years ago, I had a profound encounter with God, and everything changed. I felt an unmistakable call to serve, to teach, to organize, and to counsel. It was a daunting prospect, especially for someone who preferred the comfort of solitude. Yet, I knew I couldn’t ignore the whisper in my heart.

Embracing the Unexpected

The journey since then has been marked by its fair share of challenges, joys, sorrows, and adventures. There have been times when I felt inadequate, overwhelmed, and frustrated. I would often complain to God, wondering why He had chosen this path for me. But He has been faithful, guiding me every step of the way, refreshing my spirit, and teaching me valuable lessons.

Gratitude for the Journey

Looking back, I realize that it would have been tragic to limit myself to the comfort zone of my childhood. God had so much more in store for me. I am grateful for His patience, for choosing me to be His servant, and for the incredible experiences we’ve shared together.

A Life of Purpose

As I reflect on John 20:21, “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you,” I am reminded that our lives are not our own. We are called to serve, to love, and to make a difference in the world around us. It may not always be easy, but it is in embracing the unexpected that we find true purpose and fulfillment.
