The Power of Honesty: A Liberating Experience
As I sat in church, listening to the pastor’s sermon on honesty, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own life. The verse from Psalm 51:6 resonated deeply: “But you desire honesty from the heart, so you can teach me to be wise in my inmost being.” It was as if God was speaking directly to me.
A Carton of Cream and a Lesson in Integrity
The previous day, while unloading groceries from my car, I had discovered a carton of cream that I hadn’t paid for. It was an honest mistake, but I knew I needed to make it right. However, I conveniently forgot about it, not wanting to go back to the store and wait in line again. But the Holy Spirit didn’t let me off the hook that easily.
Convicted and Set Free
As soon as the pastor asked us to examine our lives for areas of dishonesty, the image of that carton of cream flashed before my eyes. I knew I had to take action. I turned to my husband and said, “I need to stop by the grocery store.” He drove me back to the store, where I confessed my mistake to a surprised cashier. Her repeated praise of my honesty was humbling, but it was the sense of freedom and joy I felt “in my inmost being” that truly amazed me.
Obedience Brings Freedom
If the Holy Spirit is convicting you of something, don’t wait – obey. It’s easy to rationalize our mistakes, but God desires truth and honesty from us. I’m grateful for His Holy Spirit, who gently convicts us of sin and guides us towards obedience.
A Prayer for Obedience
Father, it’s so easy to justify our wrong actions and attitudes. Yet, you desire truth and honesty from us. Thank you for your Holy Spirit, who convicts us of sin and leads us to obedience. Help us to surrender to your will and experience the freedom that comes with living honestly. Amen.
