The Unconditional Love of Jesus: A Marriage Like No Other
When we stop to consider the relationship between Jesus and humanity, it’s striking to realize just how one-sided it is. We, as His bride, have consistently failed to live up to our end of the bargain, yet He remains committed to us without condition. It’s a remarkable display of devotion, especially when compared to our own fleeting commitments.
The Culture of Convenience
Our society often perpetuates the idea that relationships should be easy and convenient. We’re quick to abandon ship when things get tough, justifying our exit by convincing ourselves that there must be someone better out there. But this mentality ignores the fundamental truth that all relationships come with challenges. Even the most loving and committed partnerships will face trials that test their resolve.
A Marriage That Defies Human Logic
Jesus’ marriage to us is a stark contrast to our own expectations. As Dan Haseltine so eloquently put it, “Look at the marriage of Jesus — the one with the bride who sleeps around, never listens, disowns, scorns, dishonors, runs away, intentionally proves to be more interested in anything but her husband, is selfish and bears the children of every affair and the scent of every escapade. It was a marriage that killed Jesus. And it was the Gospel that brought Him back to life to love once more.” This is a relationship that would have ended in divorce long ago if Jesus thought like us. But He doesn’t. He chooses to love us unconditionally, even when we’re at our worst.
A God Who Chooses to Love
Does God have the right to expect more from us? Absolutely. But He doesn’t take it. Instead, He chooses to love us despite our flaws and shortcomings. This selfless love is the very essence of the Gospel. If Jesus were to abandon us, we’d be lost forever. But He doesn’t. He remains committed to us, even when it’s hard.
Learning from Jesus’ Example
We could all stand to learn from Jesus’ approach to relationships. He never looks for an easy way out or justifies His exit based on our failures. Instead, He chooses to love us without condition, seeing us as holy, blameless, and beautiful. This is a love that transforms us, making us beautiful in His eyes, even when we know we’re not worthy.
Love Over the Long Haul
This kind of love is essential for any relationship to thrive. It’s a love that’s willing to suffer alongside us, to see us through the tough times, and to patiently wait for us to grow and mature. It’s a love that’s not based on our performance or worthiness but on the finished product that Jesus has already paid for on the cross. If we can learn to see each other through Jesus’ eyes, we might just find that our relationships become more patient, more loving, and more enduring.
