Partners in Spiritual Growth
As Christians, we often hear that God is working in us to bring about His good purposes. But what does that really mean? How do we become more like Jesus, and what’s our role in the process?
A Partnership, Not a Solo Act
Philippians 1:6 and 2:12-13 remind us that God initiates good works in us, but we must also “work out our salvation with fear and trembling.” This partnership is key to our spiritual growth. God ignites a passion for Jesus within us, but we must fan the flame by seeking Him and following through on His instructions.
The Importance of Follow-Through
If we don’t follow through on the last thing God asked us to do, we miss out on an incredible opportunity for spiritual growth. We may even regress. But it’s not too late! God loves us dearly and is used to dealing with slow learners (that’s all of us!). Today is a new chance to experience the next best thing God has for us.
No Room for Guilt
Feeling guilty about past mistakes or unfinished business? Throw that thought away! Our sins are already covered and paid for. Instead, focus on the present moment and the next step God is asking you to take.
A Reward Worth Pursuing
The Apostle Paul’s prayer for the Philippian Christians is a reminder of the reward that awaits us when we continue to listen, trust, and obey: “that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight… filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11).
A Prayer for Obedience
Dear Jesus, please help me understand the next thing You want me to do to become more like You, and please give me the courage to respond obediently. Amen.
