Reviving a Timeless Tradition: The New City Catechism
A Vision for Spiritual Growth
In an increasingly secular world, spiritual growth and development are more crucial than ever. The New City Catechism, a resource born out of Tim Keller’s vision, has taken root in the American church and beyond, selling over half a million copies worldwide. But what drives this remarkable success?
A Convictional Project
Collin Hansen, a key figure in the project, attributes the catechism’s popularity to its biblical, historical, and relevant approach. Initially conceived as a church project for Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, the catechism was designed to be a free digital resource, available to all. This convictional project has exceeded all expectations, with its success a testament to God’s work.
Making it Accessible
The catechism’s widespread adoption can be attributed, in part, to its accessibility. The entire resource is available for free on newcitycatechism.com, with a mobile app for iOS and Android devices. Translated into twenty-two languages, it has become a valuable tool for individuals, families, and churches worldwide.
A Church Project
The New City Catechism originated as a church project, led by Tim Keller and his colleague, Sam Shammas. It was adapted from classic Reformed catechisms, such as Westminster, Heidelberg, and Geneva, and condensed into a 52-week format. This innovative approach made it possible to create a kid’s version, condensing each answer to make it easier for children to understand.
A Vision for Spiritual Growth
Tim Keller’s vision for the catechism was motivated by a desire to provide a resource that would help people grow spiritually in an increasingly secular world. His approach was both normative, rooted in historical theology, and situational, addressing the needs of contemporary believers.
A Resource for All
The New City Catechism has become a valuable tool for individuals, families, and churches seeking to deepen their understanding of God’s word. With its kid’s edition, devotional, and curriculum, it offers a comprehensive approach to spiritual growth. As we navigate an increasingly complex world, this resource provides a timeless tradition for spiritual development.
