Intimacy with God: A Simple yet Profound Reminder
As I reflect on my daily life, I’m reminded of the importance of staying connected with Jesus. The Bible urges us to “remember how the Lord your God led you” (Deuteronomy 8:6) and to “remember the wonders He has done” (Psalm 105:5). My heart longs to be more intimately acquainted with Him, to “sift the days for symbols and scan the sunsets for meaning” and to “enter into the being of life, alert to transcendencies in ordinary things.”
The Struggle to Stay Focused
Despite my best intentions, I often find myself distracted by the busyness of life. Inattentiveness and everyday distractions divert my attention, causing me to lose sight of God’s presence. It’s disheartening to realize that I’ve spent entire days without being consciously aware of Him, even when I’m engaged in “God’s work.” Guilt and self-rebuke only serve to further hinder my progress.
A Simple yet Effective Solution
A friend’s humorous suggestion proved to be a game-changer: wearing a rubber band on my wrist as a reminder to acknowledge Christ’s presence and “invite Him in” to each moment. To my surprise, it worked! The mere sight of the rubber band was a sufficient and blessed reminder. Just as a skilled cook no longer needs a recipe for a familiar dish, I look forward to the day when I won’t need this visual cue.
Gratitude for God’s Presence
Until then, I’m grateful for the moments when I feel God’s presence and for those times when the feeling is absent but His presence remains. I thank Him for the grace He extends to me as I walk falteringly with Him. The “Rubber Band Secret” may seem simple, but it’s a powerful reminder of God’s constant presence in my life.
