From Doubt to Faith: Building an Unshakeable Foundation

The Unshakeable Foundation of Faith

When we think about the Bible, we often consider it a valuable resource for teaching us what is true and guiding us towards a life of righteousness. As the apostle Paul wrote, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). But what happens when our faith is shaken, and we begin to doubt the very foundation of our beliefs?

A Crisis of Faith

For my husband and me, this crisis occurred just two months after our wedding. We had left our comfortable lives behind to attend Bible College, hoping to deepen our understanding of the Bible and strengthen our Christian faith. However, the opposite happened. Some of the professors’ teachings raised serious doubts about the authenticity of the Bible, and we began to question the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, the parting of the Red Sea, and even the story of Jonah and the whale. As a result, we started to pick and choose what we wanted to believe, disregarding the parts that didn’t align with our attitudes and lifestyle.

The Consequences of Doubt

But doubting the Word of God had severe consequences. We lost our absolute standard for measuring life, and I became unstable and unhappy, feeling like I had lost my bearings. It was as if I was drifting aimlessly, without a clear direction or purpose.

A Turning Point

Fortunately, our friends and relatives noticed our wavering faith and encouraged us to attend a Christian conference. This life-changing experience helped us yield control of our lives to Jesus Christ. A few weeks later, I heard a message by Dr. Henry Brandt, a psychologist, who made a profound statement: “I had to make a choice to believe the Bible was my ultimate authority, not worldly wisdom, but God’s Word.” Right then, I made a decision to choose the Bible as my authority, rejecting anything that didn’t align with God’s Word.

Rediscovering Stability and Joy

As I began applying God’s teachings to my life, I regained stability, peace, joy, guidance, wisdom, and much more. I realized that there would always be things in the Bible that I wouldn’t fully understand, but that was because of God’s greatness and my own limitations, not because the Bible wasn’t true.

A Daily Commitment

I urge you to take time to read the Bible every day, asking God to show you what He wants to teach you. You’ll be surprised how often it’s exactly what you need. Let us pray together: “Father, thank You for Your Holy Word. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who opens our minds to what You want to teach us each time we read it. Give us a hunger and thirst for the Bible. Amen.”
